On Friday the 15th of September 2023, the Government of Lesotho through the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftainship, Home Affairs, and Police through Home Affairs Agency under National Identity and Civil Registry department, (NICR) issued 50 birth certificates and 200 national identity documents to Semonkong community in commemoration of World Identity (ID) Day at Semonkong. This was a memorable moment for those document recipients.

The Honourable Minister Lebona Lephema appreciated IOM’s support that they have been providing to Basotho Nation for a very long time. He said with Lesotho being landlocked by South Africa (SA), everything is compromised such as the economy of this country, livelihood of Basotho and they are trying their best to see to it that at the end of the day, they can reach a stage whereby Basotho can move freely in and out of SA.

The two day meeting stems from the initial meeting that took place on the 2nd February 2023 in Pretoria South Africa. The Honourable Minister Lephema said in their discussion, it has been agreed that, they work with agility and strengthen mutual cooperation to end cross border crimes among others being Human Trafficking, stock theft, money laundering linked to cash in transit heists and illegal mining called “Zama Zamas” . “We remain stubborn in our pursuit of safety and justice beyond our borders and remain resolute that criminals will not run amok between Lesotho and South Africa without any repercussions” he said.
