Lesotho on Wednesday held a solemn commemoration marking 30 years since the passing of His Majesty King Moshoeshoe II at the Manthabiseng Convention Centre. The gathering brought together the Royal Family, government leaders, diplomats, academics, and members of the public for an evening of reflection on the late Monarch’s leadership and enduring Pan-African legacy.

At the apex of the commemoration, His Majesty King Letsie III addressed attendees, expressing deep gratitude to former South African President Thabo Mbeki for delivering the memorial lecture marking three decades since the passing of King Moshoeshoe II. He said the gathering bridged past and present, reaffirming the late King’s leadership founded on courage, vision, unity, and service. The King underscored the lecture’s call for leadership guided by conscience and moral integrity, urging Basotho and Africans to carry forward the values of justice, peace, and responsibility with renewed commitment.

Lesotho joined the global community in commemorating World Refugee Day, with government officials, partners, and members of the refugee community gathering in Maseru to reflect on the country’s commitments and challenges in supporting displaced people.

Speaking at the event, Minister Lebona Lephema reaffirmed Lesotho’s long-standing tradition of peace, hospitality, and adherence to international law. He emphasized that the Kingdom remains committed to providing asylum and protection to those seeking refuge within its borders.

“In keeping with our tradition of peace and respect for international law, the Kingdom of Lesotho continues to ensure that refugees and asylum seekers are afforded due process, legal recognition, and access to essential services,” he said. He noted that through the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftainship, Home Affairs, and Police, and in partnership with the UNHCR and other stakeholders, efforts to strengthen protection mechanisms remain ongoing.
